Trustees & Quantum Computing

As quantum computing continues to advance, trustees should follow a proactive approach on evaluating measures to protect their sensitive data and infrastructure. In my opinion, there are some elements that trustees should take into account to safeguard against quantum threats:

  • Assessment of internal quantum-resistant encryption methods:

o   Identify cryptographic protocols or algorithms that could be compromised by quantum computers.

o  Ensure use of encryption techniques resistant to quantum computing and post-quantum cryptography compatible with existing internal systems.

  • Quantum readiness plan:

o   Develop a comprehensive strategy that outlines steps for transitioning to quantum-safe solutions, including software, hardware, and network upgrades.

o   Anticipate future quantum advancements and their potential impact on business.

  • Staff training on quantum threats: Foster a culture of quantum awareness through solid quantum computing training on:

o    Implications for data security

o    Best practices for safeguarding sensitive information.

  • Quantum risks in trustees service providers: assessment of quantum resilience of trustees third parties and service providers in particular if services as compliance or reporting are outsourced. Ideally ensure collaboration to identify potential vulnerabilities and develop joint strategies to decrease quantum risks collectively.

As quantum computers become more powerful and reliable, their practicality for real-world applications are increasing.

From a trustee perspective, anticipate and address the potential risks posed by quantum computing will help to:

  • Understand and strengthen trustees’ quantum security posture.

  • Invest in quantum-safe solutions today to safeguard trustees against future quantum threats.

Quantum computing is an emerging field that has the potential to revolutionise the trust industry by solving complex problems at an unprecedented speed. While its exact trajectory is uncertain, it is crucial to explore its capabilities and challenges on the path to full development.
